Bluefin Are Frustrating

Many expletives have been dispatched in their name, especially when they lock onto microbait. While casting at breaking fish is always tantalizing, the prospect of fighting them on light tackle isn’t—a constant dilemma when an angler’s lure selections are limited by the size of their target species's forage.

Enter the Pínchovy—this miniature stickbait was designed from the ground up to successfully target big bluefin with heavy tackle without making performance accommodations in any category. At 100mm and 71g the Pínchovy's density and weight balance makes the country-mile long casts needed for boat-shy fish a breeze, enabling casts into the wind and unlocking the use of two-speed lever drag reels, while still retaining the small profile needed to blend in with oversized larvae.

Working the lure is even easier: simply put the reel in gear and turn the handle. At a medium-slow pace, the lure lazily slides from side to side with tight turns, mixed with occasional stutters and double-backs. Increasing speed to medium-fast tightens up the swim pattern while increasing erraticism and vibration. Shifting up to "as fast as you can turn the handle" further tightens the pattern to a straight wiggle with occasional hiccups and darts-which bluefin find irresistible. Owing to the mass properties and control surfaces the Pínchovy will never spin or plane. Blistering retrieves combined with an elevated rod tip will cause the lure to breach and snake across the surface before diving and returning to swimming—a very effective take on the skip jig presentation. This combination also unlocks another hidden talent of the Pínchovy—it’s high-speed troll-able. Factor in multi-species attraction and it becomes a one-lure solution for small bait presentations in offshore Southern California fishing.

The Pínchovy is built around a laser cut 316 stainless steel plate chassis so losing a fish from lure failure is never a concern, and combined with the solid urethane resin construction ensures the lure will continue to function for as long as you own it. Best of all they are all 100% made here in San Diego, California by fellow anglers. Give one a try, they’re #alreadybit.

  • Slow to Medium Pace

Large amplitude darts linked by tight turns, mixed with brief stutters and early cut outs.

  • Quick Pace

Unpredictable wandering darts and dashes blended with a pulsing tail beat.

  • Burned

Tight, wiggling tail beat punctuated by quick line shifts and sporadic large amplitude darts.

Rigging

The Pínchovy was engineered to retain its tantalizing action while using heavy line/leader and bigger hooks. It is mostly insensitive to hook size variations within the ranges listed to remain flexible with what tackle is available. It is imperative to always connect to the lure with a snap or ring (split or welded), both to ensure proper action and to prevent breakoffs. The edges of the eyelets are rounded to prevent line damage from incidental contact but are still square enough to inhibit direct tying. A swivel is not needed due to the lure’s never-spin stability and is even recommended against for best performance. Optimal swimming action can be realized by minimizing terminal tackle attached to the nose eyelet, and by using connecting hardware with a wide, round bend for increased degrees of freedom.

For targeting school-size fish with general casting tackle (i.e. baitcasters, star drags, small spin gear; drag settings under 20lbs), a dual hook configuration is recommended. More hook points for better grappling and lighter wire for better penetration. For those targeting big game with heavy gear (i.e. lever drags, heavy spin gear; 20lb+ drag) we recommend using a lone larger single hook attached to the belly eyelet. This arrangement allows for the use of a large gap, heavy wire hook for exceptional holding power while delivering phenomenal action. A single point of contact improves the likelihood of the hook point burying past the barb through hard mouths and thick, bony jaws, reducing the risk of a hook pulling during a prolonged fight.
